The Watch saw the fires burning in the outpost a mile or two from the city walls. Townsfolk barricaded themselves in their shops and homes, horrified as the unearthly deep shouts and depraved laughter echoed off the hills and into the streets. Our militia armed and mounted. We were all older, hardened, veterans of conflicts that have slipped into the faded memories of the few of us left. We charged from the East Gate, riding hard.
